In 2012, a group of concerned citizens formed San Saba County Friends of Animals (SSCFOA), a nonprofit organization whose mission is to help lost, abandoned, neglected and abused animals in San Saba County. With just a small city shelter in San Saba (for dogs only) and no shelter at all out in the county, the need is great. SSCFOA operates a foster-based rescue and adoption program for homeless dogs and cats and helps reunite lost pets with their families. The group also runs a trap/neuter/return program for community cats (TNR) and offers a low-cost spay/neuter assistance program for family pets (SNAP). These two programs are aimed at reducing the animal overpopulation problem in our county. Interesting fact – one female cat and her mate, plus their offspring, can produce as many as 370,000 additional cats over seven years. That’s a lot of cats! Through TNR and SNAP, SSCFOA helps prevent the birth of a huge number of unwanted animals.
According to Kate Beckes, president and co-founder, SSCFOA has helped nearly 2,000 dogs and cats through its rescue and adoption program. In addition, through TNR and SNAP, over 2,200 free-roaming cats and 200 family pets have been spayed or neutered. The group works closely with the animal control department of the city of San Saba and the sheriff’s department in San Saba County to resolve animal problems and make life better for dogs and cats in our county and the people who care about them. All of this happens with a lot of cooperation and support from the San Saba community. If you know of an animal in need, please contact SSCFOA at 325-372-PETS (7387) or through Facebook at www.facebook.com/SanSabaCountyFriendsOfAnimals.

Blaylock Funeral Home located at 143 Nixon Lane in San Saba was founded in August of 2011. According to Blaylock, they try to go above and beyond to take some of the burdens of funeral planning off of the families while honoring their loved ones wishes. They try to make some of the most difficult days a little bit easier and smoother the best that they can Blaylock Funeral Home opened their doors because they believed that God called them to be in the funeral home line of work. They stated that they love the people and getting to know everyone in the San Saba County community. According to Blaylock Funeral Home one interesting fact that most consumers don’t know is that Texas has many different laws regarding funeral services. One for instance is that you do no have to be embalmed to be cremated or buried. The only time that you have to be embalmed is if you are having a public viewing or you are being shipped out of the State of Texas. If you have questions or want discuss funeral arrangements Contact their Funeral Director in Charge, Shana Benner Paddie at [email protected] or (325) 372-5001.

Spiral Horn Coffee Co. was founded in 2019 by Mark Hedley and is located at 3890 County Road 226 in San Saba, Texas. Mark stated that he started Spiral Horn Coffee Company as a way to fulfill his desire to eliminate bad coffee from peoples’ lives while offering great coffee at a fair and reasonable price. According to Mark Spiral Horn Coffee Company understands the science and techniques of roasting that accentuate the acidity, body, and flavors inherent in the coffee beans that specialty coffee farmers work so hard to produce. He said that they work diligently every day to make you and coffee farmers proud of the relationship with Spiral Horn Coffee Company. Mark enjoys doing business in the San Saba County area. He enjoys creating personal and meaningful relationships with other community residents and small businesses in a small-town community like the one that he grew up in.
One interesting fact according to Mark is that Coffee is the second most valuable, legally traded, commodity in the world (oil is #1). Stop by and enjoy a fresh roasted cup today.
